Last week, we had the pleasure of taking our Y9 football team to Oakwood for the first fixture of the 24/25 campaign.
With a few additions this season, we looked to have a super strong squad, which proved the case in the opening 10 minutes as we raced into a 2-0 lead! A tidy finish from Ciaran and a 25-yard curling effort from Basit put us in total control early on. The lads kept pushing for more goals and they arrived towards half time. Basit tucked home from close range for the third before rounding off a first half hat trick by smashing the ball past the Oakwood keeper after a lovely through ball from Ciaran.
Credit to Oakwood in the second half, who despite being 4-0 down came out of the traps with real resilience. Two early goals for them put us under lots of pressure, with Layton being called into action a number of times to produce a string of fine saves! Mustawafa eased the pressure slightly, who came on in the second half and galloped forward before unleashing a wonder strike from 20 yards into the top corner – the score now at 5-2.
Oakwood still kept pressing to get back in the game and scored another two goals with 15 minutes to go, this time a great free kick and low strike into the corner giving Layton no chance – the score now at 5-4. Our summer signing Aristarkh, who was a threat all game, caught Oakwood on the break next and managed to slot the ball past the keeper to ease the nerves yet again. But with three minutes to go, Oakwood pinched another meaning we were heading into stoppage time with the score at 6-5. With one minute left on the clock, man of the match Abdu made a great tackle, before a Clifton break left Ciaran free to tuck in his second of the game and secure our first win of the season.
It was a brilliant game and both sets of students had a great evening, which is what it’s all about!
