Another Y9 Football Success!

This week, our Y9 football team made the short trip to Saint Pius in high spirits after last week’s opening win against Oakwood. After losing in a penalty shoot-out last season, they were determined to put in a performance this time around.

Saint Pius started the better of the teams, calling Laiton into action numerous times before breaking the deadlock with a well worked goal. We had to rally, with Abdu and Mason holding strong at centre back and Levi working hard to stay with the Saint Pius winger.

They finally settled and got a foothold in the game, with Basit beginning to dictate the game in midfield. We got our reward for sticking together when Aristarkh latched onto a loose ball and curled in a superb equaliser. Now in the driving seat, they pushed to take advantage and did so through Yousif’s low drive into the corner and Arsitarkh blasting in his second of the game. They rounded off a brilliant end to the half with a fourth – this time Dec putting in a superb corner for Basit to head home. 4-1 at half time.

Saint Pius didn’t give up and battled hard in an even start to the second half, but there was no stopping Aristarkh, with the Clifton striker latching on to a perfect through ball from Abdu before placing the ball past the keeper to round off a wonderful hat trick! A goal for Saint Pius shortly after put us back under some pressure and it could have been worse! Saint Pius through on goal, forcing Laiton into the best save I have seen at school boy level in the six years I have been at Clifton – racing out and spreading himself in Schmeichel like fashion to deflect the ball over the bar from point blank range.

They rounded off the evening in style, with striker Ciaran slamming the ball home after good work from our midfield to find him. Final score – 6-2.

Another brilliant, hardworking performance from our boys! They are really starting to gel as a team and it shows both on and off the pitch.

Please say well done if you see any of the following students, they did us proud as always!
