Our Year 11 Geography students recently embarked on an exciting field trip to Hornsea on the East Yorkshire coast, gaining invaluable hands-on experience that will support their preparation for both Paper 1 and Paper 3 of their GCSE examinations. This trip is a brilliant example of the Wickersley Partnership Trust’s Enrichment Promise, giving students opportunities to apply classroom learning in real-world contexts and develop practical skills beyond the curriculum.
The day provided students with a unique chance to observe coastal erosion processes first-hand and collect vital data for their Paper 3 exam. The dramatic erosion visible at Hornsea offered a real-world illustration of geographical concepts, bringing theory to life in a way that textbooks alone cannot match.
Students enthusiastically engaged with fieldwork activities, including measuring groynes along the coastline – essential coastal management techniques used to combat erosion. This practical experience allowed them to understand how wooden and concrete barriers trap sediment and protect the shoreline from the relentless forces of the sea.
The students were fully immersed in their investigations, demonstrating excellent teamwork and scientific enquiry skills throughout the day. The visible evidence of coastal erosion at the site also highlighted the challenges facing coastal communities, giving students a deeper understanding of human and physical geography.
This field trip has not only enhanced students’ knowledge of coastal processes and management strategies but also equipped them with the practical data collection and analytical skills essential for success in their GCSE Geography papers. We are incredibly proud of how engaged and enthusiastic our students were throughout the day, well done!
