This week, we were delighted to welcome The Mercians to Clifton Community School. This up-and-coming indie rock band, known for their energetic live shows and heartfelt songwriting, performed for our Year 7, 8, and 9 pupils, as well as our Year 10 BTEC Music cohort. Formed in the Midlands, The Mercians have built a strong following thanks to their distinctive sound and their commitment to honest, relatable storytelling in their music.
The band delivered an exciting live set that had pupils captivated. After the performance, our Year 10 BTEC Music students took part in a Q&A session, gaining valuable insight into the realities of working in the music industry. The Mercians spoke openly about their journey – from early rehearsals in small venues to recording and releasing their own music – and offered practical advice on creativity, collaboration, and perseverance.
A particularly powerful part of the visit was the band’s discussion about mental health and seeking support. They shared personal experiences of facing challenges, emphasising the importance of looking out for one another and reaching out when things feel overwhelming. Their message was clear: no one has to face difficult moments alone, and help is always available.
The visit left pupils feeling inspired, informed, and uplifted. We are incredibly grateful to The Mercians for giving our students such a memorable and meaningful experience!
